If you are joining a bulker and wondering about internet on bulk carriers, what to expect is this: something between nothing and decent, decided almost entirely by who owns the ship rather than by any technical limit. Two identical Panamax bulkers built in the same yard can have completely different setups. One gives the crew unlimited Starlink in the mess room. The other gives you 200 MB a month on a VSAT link that dies every time the ship rolls hard.

That gap is the whole story. Bulk carriers sit at the bottom of the shipping industry's spending order, and crew connectivity is one of the first things a tight budget cuts.

The short answer, before the detail

Most bulk carriers in 2026 fall into one of three groups. Roughly a third of the fleet now has some form of low earth orbit service, usually Starlink Maritime, and on those ships the internet is genuinely usable. Another large slice still runs older geostationary VSAT with a hard monthly cap per crew member, typically measured in hundreds of megabytes rather than gigabytes. A shrinking tail still runs nothing but Fleet Broadband for ship business, and the crew gets email only.

Which group your ship falls into is not something you can look up. Ask the departing engineer before you sign on. That single message is worth more than any article, including this one.

Why bulkers are different from container ships

Bulk carriers make money by moving cheap cargo slowly, and every dollar of operating cost gets fought over. A container line running scheduled services on a brand people recognise has commercial reasons to keep crew happy and to advertise good conditions. A bulker owner with eight ships under a flag of convenience often has none of that pressure.

Three practical consequences follow from this.

Older ships, older equipment. The average bulk carrier is older than the average container ship, and antenna hardware gets replaced when it fails rather than when something better appears. A ship built in 2009 with a working VSAT dome may keep that dome until the ship is scrapped.

Trading patterns that break coverage. Bulkers go where the cargo is. That means Western Australia, the Brazilian iron ore terminals, the Black Sea, West Africa, and long stretches of the Southern Ocean and the mid-Pacific. Container ships mostly run the same busy lanes over and over, and those lanes have the best satellite coverage in the world. You will not.

Long waits at anchor. This one cuts both ways. Waiting three weeks off a Chinese discharge port is miserable, and it is also the situation where a decent connection changes everything about the trip. It is also where you might pick up shore mobile signal, which matters more than crew ever expect.

What speed and allowance actually look like

Here is the honest comparison of what you find on bulkers today. Figures are ballpark ranges from what is commonly installed, and any specific ship can sit outside them.

The number that surprises new joiners is the allowance, not the speed. A 5 Mbps link sounds fine until you learn you get 500 MB for the month. That is roughly one hour of standard definition video, or about 40 minutes of a video call, for four weeks. People burn a month of data in a single evening and then spend the rest of the trip on text messages.

How the allowance is usually enforced

Most VSAT installations use a captive portal with per-crew logins and a prepaid card system. You buy time or data from the master or the purser, often in cards worth a few dollars, and the portal cuts you off when the balance hits zero. Prices vary wildly between operators. Some companies give the allowance free as part of the contract, some sell it at cost, and a few resell it at a markup that would embarrass a hotel minibar.

Read your contract or the crew handbook on this before you join. If the company charges for data, that is a real cost of the job, and it belongs in your calculation alongside salary and leave.

MLC 2006 and what it does not guarantee

The Maritime Labour Convention amendments that came into force in December 2024 added social connectivity to the seafarer welfare provisions, and this is the point most articles get wrong. The amendment requires shipowners to provide seafarers with access to internet where reasonably practicable, with charges that are reasonable in amount. It does not set a speed. It does not set an allowance. It does not say the access must be free.

In practice this has moved the floor up. Ships that gave crew nothing at all are now under real pressure from port state control and from charterers who ask about it during vetting. It has not made bulk carriers equal to container ships, and it will not on its own.

If your ship provides nothing and you are being told it is not practicable, that is worth raising with the company and with your union. On a modern bulker with a working satellite antenna, the practicability argument is thin.

Starlink on bulkers: the real picture

Starlink Maritime works well on bulk carriers, and it has changed the job for the crews who have it. Three things about Starlink on bulkers specifically are worth knowing before you get your hopes up.

Coverage gaps still exist on bulker routes. Starlink coverage over the deep Southern Ocean and parts of the mid-Pacific has improved a lot, but it is not the same as coverage in the North Atlantic. Ships running Australia to South America or deep southern great circle routes still report drops. Nobody who has crossed the Southern Ocean on a bulker will tell you the connection was flawless.

The crew network is often deliberately separate and limited. Plenty of owners install Starlink for ship business and give the crew a throttled slice of it, or one access point in the mess room with a schedule. Having Starlink onboard is not the same as having Starlink in your cabin.

Installation politics are real. Some owners have not fitted it because of the monthly cost, some because the charterer will not share it, and some because a technical superintendent decided the existing VSAT contract runs for another two years. None of these are things you can influence from the engine room.

The cabin problem nobody mentions

Even on a ship with genuinely good internet, the signal in your cabin may be terrible. Bulk carrier accommodation blocks are steel boxes divided by steel bulkheads, and the single access point in the ship's office does not reach the cabin at the end of the alleyway on C deck.

This is the single most fixable problem on this list, and most crew never fix it. The other half of the fix is timing. Ship wifi behaves like a shared road, and everyone piles onto it between 1800 and 2200 when the day workers finish. If you can call home at 0600 instead, you get a connection that feels like a different ship.

Port calls are still where most of your data comes from

On most bulkers, the majority of your real internet use happens alongside or at anchor, on your own phone, on a local network. This has not changed with Starlink and probably will not for a while, because bulker port calls are long and shore data is cheap.

The catch on bulk carriers is that the terminals are rarely near a town. Iron ore and coal berths sit far outside the city, in industrial areas with one mast serving the whole terminal. Grain terminals are often better. Signal strength alongside a Brazilian ore terminal or a Western Australian export berth can be one bar or none at all, and going ashore is often impossible because of the terminal's own rules.

A few habits make a real difference here.

Download before you sail, not after. Queue films, podcasts, course material and family photos while you have shore signal. Trying to stream at sea on a bulker allowance is how people run out in three days.

Honest downsides of bulk carrier connectivity

If you are choosing between company types, these are the real drawbacks rather than the polite version.

The allowance is usually the binding constraint, not the speed. Even on good ships, crew data plans on bulkers tend to be sized for messaging and email, not for a video call every evening. Plan your family expectations around that before you leave, because a partner who expects a nightly video call and gets one a week takes it badly.

Consistency is poor and you cannot plan around it. Weather, ship heading, roll, blockage from the accommodation block, and the position of the antenna all affect a geostationary VSAT link. There will be days in bad weather when nothing works, and those are exactly the days you most want to talk to someone.

You have no leverage over the setup. You cannot fit your own antenna, you cannot change the contract, and on many ships you cannot even ask for the access point to be moved. Whatever the ship has when you join is what you get for the whole contract.

The information you get before signing on is usually wrong. Crewing agents describe internet in vague, optimistic terms. The phrase "the vessel has internet" covers everything from unlimited Starlink to 100 MB of email a month, and agents rarely know the difference themselves.

Cost is passed to crew more often than on liner ships. Paying for your own data at sea is normal on a lot of bulker tonnage, and the price per gigabyte can be many times shore rates.

Who should not join a bulker expecting good internet

Some people genuinely should pick a different sector, and there is no shame in deciding that.

If you have young children at home and daily video calls are what keeps you sane, ask specifically about Starlink before you accept the ship. On a VSAT bulker in the Southern Ocean, daily video calls are not going to happen, and finding that out three weeks in is brutal.

If you run any kind of side business, trade, or manage anything online, do not rely on a bulker connection. Long anchorage waits with no signal will cost you money.

If you need constant contact for a family medical situation, tell the company before you join. Most masters will help with the ship's link in a genuine emergency, and that is a conversation to have on day one, not on the day something happens.

What a realistic month looks like

Take a Supramax loading grain in the US Gulf and discharging in Southeast Asia, a typical bulker trip, with modern VSAT and a 2 GB monthly crew allowance.

Alongside in the Gulf you have a US data eSIM running at full speed, and you spend two days downloading everything you will need for the crossing. At sea you use WhatsApp text and voice notes daily, which costs very little, and one short video call a week that eats maybe 200 MB. Photos from home arrive compressed. You check email in the morning before the evening rush.

Off the discharge port you wait nine days at anchor, five miles from shore, and your phone picks up a weak local signal that works if you stand on the bridge wing. That is where half your month's real internet happens. Then you sail, and you are back on a 2 GB allowance for the next leg.

This is a normal, decent bulker experience in 2026. It is workable, it is not what you have at home, and the people who cope best are the ones who arrived knowing that.
